Tender Mercies
12" x 12"
Encaustic on Wood Panel
I grew up in the Florida panhandle, spending almost every weekend on the pristine waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Three miles offshore, where the shoreline was no longer visible, you could see straight down to the bottom in 25 feet of turquoise water.
When the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill erupted, the threat stirred a protective spirit in me.
As I created these pieces, I seemed to take the perspective of a small organism in the Gulf, looking up through the waters towards the beam of light in the sky.The fragile and arrestingly beautiful dark-and-light illustrations helped to give voice to this concern in my work. The end results express my awareness of the fragility of nature and our increasing need to protect it.
